Many business owners who I speak to believe that their worth is often tied to things outside of themselves. For example, many entrepreneurs believe that their worth is tied to the amount of top investor meetings they get invited to, which business owners they spend time with or even their own achievements.

However, what happens when those things come into existence?

I wanted to use an extreme example of a feat that most people will never experience in their life; an event that every single person around the globe is aware of. That is: the first time humans landed on the moon.

Buzz Aldrin was one of the first 3 astronauts on 20th July 1969 to complete this feat. It was amidst the Cold War and these 3 men were the people that were most famous in America, if not the whole world during this period. Everyone saw them as heroes as they came back into society. Imagine if you too had that aim to go into space and land on the moon. How would you feel once you had achieved it? Imagine yourself right now completing your largest goal, how would that make you feel.

For the astronauts this period was a time of celebration as many of us have experienced once we reach our goals, however, what then?

After going into space this is where all the astronauts took a turn for the worst. They all struggled with depression. Buzz specifically had a roller coaster after. Since the 1970s Buzz has been through 3 marriages, hopelessly worked as a salesman selling Cadillacs in Beverly Hills, worked in the air force but quit after failing as commander of a test pilot school, battled severe depression, had affairs, was an alcoholic and more.

Buzz even said:
‘I’d been to the moon, I’d travelled around but what would I do next? So I felt discouraged, disappointed and like I wasn’t a part of it.’

Imagine that in your life your main goal was to go to the moon. That is everything that you have worked for, that is what you want more than anything … You work hard day and night to move yourself closer and closer towards the goal. You then go up to space come back a hero and shake the presidents hand with millions of people watching all over the globe. What on earth do you do next?

The fact is that Buzz tied his identity to an event that couldn’t be repeated. This same issue happens with business owners around the world once they reach their top goals. It is even seen with athletes who reach their gold medal in the Olympics and then struggle with depression for months after.

Once this event was over ultimately his life lacked meaning and he lost the internal control of being able to fully appreciate life. For Buzz and the rest of the crew whose meaning and purpose was to going the moon, once that had been achieved there was nothing else.

This is another sad example of those at the very top struggling to move their lives forward after they reach their top achievement.

If you are looking for events, people, fame orgoals to define you, then you will always be in a losing battle. Despite being business owners it’s often at the top of our life achievements, our success, spending time with the people we admire mostwhere we feel the very best but only for a moment. More often than not it is followed by an unfortunate downfall.

Gratitude is one of the corner stone habits that will help you if you are struggling with this. This will help you look into what you have already accomplished in your life, what you already have in your life and help you celebrate and enjoy life as it is. This will start to recondition your mind into abundance as opposed to scarcity and constantly wanting more.

This is one of many techniques to help people with this issue. Everyone is different and we all face different issues. If you are struggling with this, feel free to message me and I can help turn your life in a new direction.
